"Apple and Rivos Reach Settlement Over Trade Secrets Dispute"

In a significant development in the tech world, Apple has reached a settlement with startup Rivos over a contentious lawsuit alleging the misappropriation of trade secrets related to computer-chip technology. The resolution, disclosed in a joint court filing on Friday in California federal court, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing legal battle between the two companies.

According to the filing, both Apple and Rivos have agreed to a comprehensive agreement that has the potential to bring an end to the protracted litigation. The lawsuit, initially filed by Apple in 2022, accused Rivos of clandestinely poaching dozens of its engineers and leveraging proprietary knowledge to develop competing "system-on-chip" (SoC) technology. SoCs, crucial components in modern computing devices, integrate multiple computer functions into a single chip, including central processing units and graphic processing units.

Apple, renowned for its innovative strides in SoC design, asserted in the lawsuit that it had invested substantial resources and over a decade of research into its proprietary SoC designs, which have had a transformative impact on personal and mobile computing.

In response, Rivos vehemently denied the allegations, characterizing Apple's legal action as an attempt to stifle competition and impede the progress of a promising startup. Rivos, based in Mountain View, California, went on to counter-sue Apple for unfair competition, further escalating the legal dispute.

The settlement comes on the heels of a previous resolution reached last month, wherein Apple settled related claims against six former employees who had departed the company to join Rivos.
